McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office hires King as Chief Investigator 

Laura L.V. King has been hired as Chief Investigator for the McHenry County State’s Attorney’s Office. King, a police professional since 1996, retired from the McHenry County Police Department as a Division Commander in 2016. A graduate of the prestigious FBI National Academy and Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command, King completed her doctorate of philosophy at Capella University (Minn.) in 2012. She also earned the distinction of Certified (Eligible) Chief of Police through the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, and has been a member of the McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team since 2012.

 

Johnsburg 

 McHenry Township to hold Community Blood Drive event 

The McHenry Township & McHenry Township Fire Protection District Community Blood Drive/Bone Marrow Registry Drive will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 28 at McHenry Township Hall, 3703 N. Richmond Road. Participants will be eligible for raffle prizes, including Walmart gift cards, movie gift cards and more. Appointments are recommended; walk-ins are welcome. Donors must bring an I.D., and are encouraged to eat a meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood. In addition, participants can join the registry for LifeSource’s bone marrow drive, sponsored in partnership with the Be the Match organization. Huntley 

 Village of Huntley offers Municipal Complex Display Case program 

The village announced that applications are now being accepted for the Municipal Complex Display Case for 2017. Items for display must be approved by the Village Manager’s office, and each accepted display will be set up for one month throughout the year. The display case is maintained in the lobby of the Municipal Complex, 10987 Main Street, in order to share personal collections, items of local community awareness or hobbies of interest. Solicitation of funds or the sale of items is prohibited, and no political or religious displays will be permitted. The display case will be reserved on a first-come, first-served basis for individuals or groups residing in Huntley. The village reserves the right to cancel any scheduled display. Spring Grove 

Carriage House Gallery to host yoga-themed public workshop 

The village announced that the Carriage House Gallery, 2110 Main St., will host “Beauty From the Inside Out,” a public workshop event, from 6-8 p.m. Jan. 30. The event will feature a light yoga class centered around the use of essential oils. Afterward, instructors will provide information on managing stress, boosting metabolism, gaining energy and more. Grapefruit water will be served as well. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable clothes and bring a yoga mat and water bottle. Additional yoga mats will be available. The fee is $5 (advance) and $10 (door) for members, and $15 (advance) and $20 (door) for non-members.  Woodstock High theater students place second at statewide event  

Woodstock High School announced that four of its theatre students — seniors Ryan Baier, Samantha Jones, Micah Muhlenfeld and Connor Zankle — finished in second place overall during the State of Illinois 2017 Tech Theatre Olympics, held Jan. 5-7 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The quartet placed first in three of the eight events: Button Sewing, Platform Construction and Sound System Set-Up. The Tech Theatre Olympics are part of the Illinois Theatre Association’s Illinois High School Theatre Festival, an annual, three-day event featuring more than 4,000 students, teachers, university representatives, exhibitors and volunteers, and more than 150 workshops and productions. Parks and Rec to hold Annual Pond Hockey Tournament 

The Lake in the Hills Parks & Recreation Department will hold its Annual Pond Hockey Tournament on Feb. 4 at Woods Creek Lake, 228 Indian Trail. Teams (limited to seven players each) can sign up for two guaranteed games to compete for the tournament trophy. Games will begin at 8 a.m. and will consist of two 15-minute halves (with a running clock) and a short halftime break. Spectators are encouraged to attend. Warming areas will be available. Crystal Lake 

 Sterne’s Woods Volunteer Work Day on tap 

The Crystal Lake Park District announced that the Sterne’s Woods Volunteer Work Day will be held from 9-11 a.m. Jan. 22. Participants will meet at the Sterne’s Outdoor Pavilion, 5617 Hillside Drive. Volunteers will cut and burn buckthorn adjacent to areas of fen, a unique type of wetland that is home to at least 10 rare or endangered plant species. The surrounding parkland acts as a buffer to the fen, and includes prairie, oak savanna and flatwood ecosystems. Work performed by volunteers will allow native plant species to thrive and reclaim ground lost to invasive types. Participants should bring a bottle of water and a pair of work gloves. The park district will supply tools. Woodstock Library to host program with noted historic illustrator

The Woodstock Public Library, 414 W. Judd Street, will host a special adult program featuring historic illustrator and cartographer Tom Willcockson from 1:30-3 p.m. Jan. 22. Willcockson will offer insights into how he conceived and produced his recently released book, “Passage to Chicago: A Journey on the Illinois & Michigan Canal in 1860.” The author’s previous book, “Twelve Moons: A Year in the Life of the Sauk & Meskwaki 1818-1819,” earned a Superior Award from the Illinois Association of Museums in 2012.
