Island Lake

 Village to host annual pancake breakfast/egg hunt

The village announced the the annual All-You-Can-Eat Pancake Breakfast & Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Island Lake Area Lioness Club, will be held from 8-11:30 a.m. April 8 at Island Lake Village Hall Gym, 3720 Greenleaf Ave. The Egg Hunt (for ages 8 and under) will begin at 10 a.m., and is free for all participants. The event also includes a 50/50 raffle, with the drawing to be held at 11:30 a.m. (winner need not be present). Proceeds will go toward the Lioness Club’s scholarship fund. In addition, all unused food from the breakfast will be donated to the Island Lake/Wauconda Food Pantry. The cost is $6 (ages 8 and up), $3 (ages 3-7 and seniors) and free (ages 2 and under). Woodstock

Donation nets protective vest for Police Dept. K9

The city reported that the Woodstock Police Department’s K9 dog, named Blue, will receive a bullet and stab wound protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from Massachusetts-based, non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Blue, a sable German Shepherd born in the Czech Republic in 2013, came to the United States to begin police K9 training in 2015. He is the Woodstock Police Department’s third K9 dog, and is certified in narcotics detection, searching areas and buildings for hidden or fleeing suspects, tracking and more. The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $1,050. Since its inception, Vested Interest has provided more than 2,300 protective vests, in all 50 states, through private and corporate donations.  Library to host seminar on Medicare choices

The Woodstock Public Library, 414 W. Judd St., will host “The A, B, C and D of Medicare: Understanding Your Medicare Choices,” an educational seminar for adults, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. April 5. The program, presented by Jane Sanchez of Aegis Resources, Inc., will provide attendees with information about choosing a Medicare plan or reviewing existing coverage. Senior Services to host Spring Fling Party

Senior Services Associates, Inc., 3519 N. Richmond Road, will host its 2017 Spring Fling Party, “Spring is Sprung,” at 1 p.m. April 7. The event, sponsored by Heritage Woods, Fair Oaks and Senior Services Associates, includes light appetizers, dessert and beverages. Live entertainment featuring celebrity impersonations, stand-up comedy, audience participation, singing and dancing will be provided by Vita Zatto. Moose Lodge to host ‘Riot for Riddick’ event 

The village announced that “Riot for Riddick: A Smashing Good Time” will be held from noon to 5 p.m. April 1 at McHenry Moose Lodge 691, 3535 N. Richmond Road. The event is intended to celebrate and raise awareness for individuals born with rare, severe and complex medical conditions. It includes car smashing, a pig roast, Touch-A-Truck, a photo booth, DJ, balloon artist, plasma cars and more. Attendees are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Almost Home Kids, a facility for children transitioning from long-term hospital care. Blue Ribbon Ride to benefit CASA kids

In recognition of Child Abuse Awareness Month, CFK (Cycling for Kids), a non-competitive cycling club that welcomes cyclists of all ages and skill levels, will host the 2017 Blue Ribbon Ride, starting at Horse Fair Park, 8105 Blivin St., on April 23. The event, benefiting CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) McHenry and CASA Lake County, includes continental breakfast, a 30-mile ride and a hot dog lunch at the finish. Registration and check-in will be held from 7-8 a.m., followed by breakfast. Rides will depart at approximately 8:30 a.m.. The registration fee is $35 before April 14, and $40 thereafter.  Algonquin

 Village announces slate for free leaf collection

The village announced that Groot Industries will offer free leaf collection for Algonquin residents, beginning April 6 and continuing through April 14. Collection will occur on normal refuse collection days. All leaves must be placed in standard, paper yard-waste bags or in reusable, 32-gallon trash containers. Residents may use a large, visible red “X” to indicate yard waste on reusable containers. Leaves should not be placed in loose piles. Groot also will provide free pick-up of branches during the same time period. Branches must be tied in bundles not exceeding four feet in length and two feet in diameter. Grass clippings and other yard waste (such as plantings, sod, dirt or wood chips) will require a collection sticker.  Crystal Lake

 Dist. 158 names Crystal Lake South principal to new post

The Community High School District 155 Board of Education recently approved Scott Shepard as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. Shepard will continue to serve in his role as principal of Crystal Lake South High School until June 30, and will begin his new post July 1. During Shepard’s four-tenure at Crystal Lake South, the school’s ACT scores increased from an average of 21.9 to 22.7, and the number of AP (Advanced Placement) tests taken nearly tripled. In addition, he was selected as the Illinois Principals Association Kishwaukee Region Principal of the Year in 2013. Shepard previously served as principal of Marengo High School after spending eight years as a principal in Nebraska.
