Cary
Vaping illegal for Minors
Cary passed an ordinance to prohibit possession of electronic cigarettes by minors. The Prevention of Tobacco Use by Minors and Sale and Distribution of Tobacco Products Act prohibits the sale of e-cigarettes to minors throughout Illinois. However, possession is not included. State Rep. Jack Franks (D-Marengo) is a sponsor of HB2250, which amends the Act to prohibit the possession of e-cigarettes to minors. Cary’s law, modeled after a municipal code in Schaumburg, allows minors to vape at home and under the direct supervision of parents.
Crystal Lake
Sidewalks scheduled for repair, refurbishing
Sidewalks between Walkup Avenue and Williams Street, along Crystal Lake Avenue, will be replaced with brick pavers this summer. The downtown will be repaved and the Brink Street parking lot realigned this summer or next. The city also plans to continue to address tripping hazards on sidewalks throughout the city.

Children find documents from Rochelle tornado
Hanna and Dalton Kowal found a mortgage statement and a Rochelle junior high school flier in their yard on April 11, two days after the tornado touched down in Rochelle. The tornado lifted before it reached the Kowal home, but the storm did take out one tree and left debris in the back yard. Other McHenry County homeowners found personal items from storm victims. People can view recovered items on a Facebook page.
Johnsburg
Retirees contribute 60 years of service
Reading Week at Johnsburg Public Library began with stories and balloons for children and ended with a reception honoring two retirees: Children’s Librarian Paulette Babchak and Library Board President Elsie Munson. Overdue fines were forgiven by donations of a nonperishable food items for each fine. Donations went to the FISH of McHenry Food Pantry. A grant from Target funded the festivities.
Marengo
Tornado spares Marengo
The same tornado that destroyed 30 homes and a restaurant in Rochelle and leveled unincorporated Fairdale, left Marengo unscarred. One of McHenry county’s best trained spotters reported the tornado about 7:40 p.m. near Route 20 and Johnson Road between Marengo and Garden Prairie. A local storm-chaser hobbyist said it was a large wedge-shaped tornado. Experts spotted another tornado near Harvard. Reported damage included some siding, a handful of power outages, and a dead chicken.
Woodstock
La Petite Creperie to leave McHenry County
After 10 years at the old Sheriff’s House on the Square, La Petite Creperie and Bistro plans to move to Barrington. Owners became frustrated with obstacles to improving and expanding the Sheriff’s House. Although Le Petite submitted plans to make $470,000 in improvements, in 2014, Woodstock City Council members developed their own ideas for the properties. The city hoped to redevelop the Old Courthouse into a mixture of uses anchored by a brew pub. The city started construction by replacing aging steps with makeshift platforms made from plywood.
