McHenry County College to host Green Living Expo

The 2017 Green Living Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 4 at the McHenry County College Gym (multi-purpose room), 8900 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake. Attendees can learn about the latest in sustainable living, get ideas for energy saving, shop for green gifts and take in educational exhibits. The event includes two fully decorated, locally owned “tiny” homes, the Living Lightly Tent, the Artists Walk, area college/university solar and super-mileage team race cars and team members, and more. American Legion Post 673 to construct addition

The village announced that Huntley American Legion Post 673, 11712 Coral St., is constructing an addition that will add 722 square feet to the existing building. The addition will be located along the east side of the building, and will allow for reconfigured bathrooms and an expanded bar area. The addition will also provide a handicap-accessible ramp to the rear parking lot and a 3-to-10-foot-tall brick wall to enclose the future honor garden. Building materials will include a brick base to match the existing building, hardi-board siding and a Hunter Green-colored, standing-seam metal roof. The brick wall enclosing the honor garden will be constructed of the same brick used on the building addition, and the light fixtures will match the fixtures used at the BBQ King building to the east. The design for the interior of the honor garden has yet to be determined and will be presented to the Village Board at a later date. Park Dist. to host Candy Bar Bingo

The Huntley Park District will host Candy Bar Bingo from 4-5:30 p.m. Nov. 4 at the REC Center Cafeteria, 12015 Mill St. The family-friendly event features an evening of Bingo games and sweet treats. No money is exchanged during Candy Bar Bingo. Each Bingo card will cost one regular-sized candy bar (no minis), and participants will keep the same card(s) all night. There is a limit of two cards per person, and six to eight games will be played. Light refreshments will be served, and candy bars will be available for purchase. Admission is $3 per person. The event is intended for ages 3 and up. Children age 11 and under must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is required. Fox River Grove

Village offers free leaf and yard waste pick-up

The village is offering free leaf and yard waste pick-up once a week through Dec. 1. Waste Management will pick up leaves and yard waste placed in brown craft bags or containers on Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 25, and Dec. 1. Yard waste stickers are not required. Yard waste collection equipment is shut down for the winter season after the last scheduled pick-up date and re-opens in the spring. The village encourages residents to clear all yards before Dec. 1., and to keep leaves and yard waste out of regular garbage. Women’s boutique shop returning to downtown

The city announced that Mum Floral & Design, a women’s clothing boutique, home accessory and floral shop, is returning to Crystal Lake’s Historic Downtown. The shop will be located at 37 N. Williams St., next to A Taste of Benedict’s & More. Mum Floral owner Lynn Lourie previously operated a store in Crystal Lake across the street from the new location before moving her business to downtown Barrington. Village returning to ComEd for electric supply

The village announced that its three-year contract with Constellation Energy will expire in November. After consultation with the village’s electrical aggregation advisor, Northern Illinois Municipal Electric Collaborative (NIMEC), the village determined it could not obtain rates guaranteed to be lower than the ComEd rate. Current Constellation Energy customers will receive a confirmation letter from ComEd notifying them of the return to ComEd supply. Residents do not need to take any action. The move back to ComEd will be reflected on the December or January 2018 bill. The ComEd rates will fluctuate between $0.06651 and $0.07651 (kWh). Village nets GFOA budget award for 14th year in row

The village announced that Algonquin has received the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its Fiscal Year 2017-2018 budget. It marks the 14th year in a row that the village has received the prestigious award. Algonquin also received a special performance measures recognition for illustrating a clear link of operational data to financial decision-making. To earn the budget award, budget documents must be rated “proficient” in four scoring categories, and the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories. In addition, award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of public sector budgeting, and provide an “excellent” example of transparency for public finance and operations. Algonquin’s Fiscal Year 2017-2018 budget represents a balanced $47 million financial plan that features $17.2 million in capital infrastructure investment. Spaghetti Dinner to benefit Collier House

The Collier House Spaghetti Dinner, a benefit fundraiser for Collier House, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting surviving families of military veterans killed in active duty, will be held from 5-7:30 p.m. Nov. 5 at McHenry VFW Post 4600, 3002 W. Route 120. The event includes a full spaghetti dinner, live music by Suzy and the Q’s, a demonstration by the St. John’s Military Academy Silver Rifles Drill Team, raffles, silent auctions and more.
