Six Carson’s stores and a Bergner’s store will be closing in Illinois.

The stores, all part of the Bon-Ton chain, that will be closing are:

• Bergner’s at Sheridan Village in Peoria.
• Carson’s at Northland Plaza in DeKalb.
• Carson’s at Riverside Plaza in Chicago.
• Carson’s at Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg.
• Carson’s Clearance Center at Aurora Shopping Center.
• Carson’s Clearance Center at Village Plaza in Morton Grove.
• Carson’s at Village Mall in Danville.

The seven Illinois store closings make up 17 percent of the 42 announced Bon-Ton closings. The company said the locations that will be closed are part of a previously communicated store rationalization program. The closing stores will include locations under all of the company’s nameplates — Bergner’s, Bon-Ton, Boston Store, Carson’s, Elder-Beerman, Herberger’s and Younkers.

Only Wisconsin (9) and Pennsylvania (8) have more Bon-Ton stores closing than Illinois.

“As part of the comprehensive turnaround plan we announced in November, we are taking the next steps in our efforts to move forward with a more productive store footprint,” said Bill Tracy, president and chief executive officer for the Bon-Ton stores. “Including other recently announced store closures, we expect to close a total of 47 stores in early 2018. (None of the previous five announced closings are in Illinois.)

“We remain focused on executing our key initiatives to drive improved performance in an effort to strengthen our capital structure to support the business going forward.

In order to ensure a seamless experience for customers, Bon-Ton has partnered with a third-party liquidator, Hilco Merchant Resources, to help manage the store closing sales.

The store closing sales began Thursday and will run for 10-12 weeks. Associates at these locations will be offered the opportunity to interview for available positions at other store locations.
