Bond has been set for a Roselle woman accused of pointing a weapon and yelling racial slurs at three youths as they walked past her home in unincorporated Roselle. Karen Komar, 49, of 205W550 Webster, appeared in Bond Court this morning where Judge Richard Russo set bond at $50,000 with 10% to apply. Komar has been charged with three counts of Hate Crime, a Class 4 Felony and three counts of Aggravated Assault, a Class A Misdemeanor. It is alleged that on June 22, 2015, at approximately 8:50 p.m., the three youths were walking in front of Komar’s home. It is alleged that at this time Komar exited her home, armed with a high-powered air rifle. It is further alleged that Komar pointed the weapon at the youths, threatened them and screamed racial slurs at them. It is alleged that the youths ran back to their homes where one of them informed their mother who immediately contacted the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office. An investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office resulted in Komar’s arrest later that evening.  “The charges against Ms. Komar are extremely serious,” Berlin said. “Hate crimes and the accompanying prejudice have no place in our society and will be met with the full force of the law. I would like to thank the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for their fine police work helping us secure charges against Ms. Komar. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorney Kristin Johnston for her efforts on this case as well.” Komar’s next court appearance is scheduled for July 20, 2015 in front of Judge John Kinsella. Members of the public are reminded that these complaints contain only charges and are not proof of the defendant’s guilt.  A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial in which it is the government’s burden to prove his or her guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
