Schaumburg

Village to conduct smoke testing on selected sanitary sewers

The village reported that it has contracted with Wheaton-based RJN Group to conduct a Sanitary Sewer Evaluation Study (SSES) to identify locations where storm water may be entering Schaumburg’s sanitary sewer system. As part of the project, contractors will be smoke-testing sanitary sewers in a section of the village in the coming weeks. Smoke testing is used under slight pressure to identify leaks that might be allowing rainwater to enter the sanitary sewers. The artificially created smoke is non-toxic, creates no fire hazard, dissipates quickly, leaves no residue and is harmless. The project is being conducted in conjunction with an ongoing effort to improve public infrastructure throughout the village. To view a map of the affected area, visit www.villageofschaumburg.com. For more information, call the Engineering & Public Works Department at (847) 895-7100.

Deerfield

Village, American Legion seek donations to aid military vets

The village and Deerfield American Legion Post 738 are inviting residents to participate in, “Give Where You Live: Deerfield,” a village-wide service campaign designed to make a difference in the lives of area military veterans. Spearheaded by Deerfield Mayor Harriet Rosenthal, the campaign is collecting donations through Veterans Day (Nov. 11). Items needed for the project include non-perishable food, clothing (including sweat suits, socks and underwear), small appliances and household items (including toiletries), gift cards to popular chain restaurants (including McDonald’s, Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts) and monetary donations. Donated items can be delivered to the Deerfield Police Department, 850 Waukegan Road, prior to Veterans Day, or to Village Hall, also at 850 Waukegan Road, on Veterans Day. Volunteers will then work together — along with Mayor Rosenthal — to make no-sew fleece blankets, assemble care packages, and write letters of thanks and encouragement to area veterans from noon to 3 p.m. Nov. 11 at Village Hall. Volunteer service activities are suitable for all ages. Donations are earmarked for West Deerfield Township Food Pantry, Midwest Veterans Closet, the VA Federal Health Care Center and COOL Ministries. For more information, contact Communications Director Mary Anne Glowacz at (847) 794-7501 or via email at mglowacz@deerfield.il.us — or visit www.deerfield.il.us.

Crestwood

Village to install emergency vehicle warnings at key intersections

The village reported that it will install Emergency Vehicle Pre-emption (EVP) equipment at 17 key, controlled intersections in Crestwood for the purpose of alerting motorists to the presence of approaching emergency vehicles. Installation of EVP equipment will require no excavation, and will be achieved by using existing conduits, hand-holes and controller cabinets to minimize the project’s expense. Federal money is expected to cover 80 percent of the estimated $185,000 cost of the project. The EVP system features a flashing white light atop the signal light at a controlled intersection, warning all in the vicinity that an emergency vehicle responding to a call is nearby, and potentially about to pass through the intersection. The village stated that an effective EVP system improves emergency response time by about 20 percent, while simultaneously reducing crashes at intersections.
