Aurora

Witnesses Help Nab Burglary Suspect

Thanks in part to a witness giving police information, Aurora police secured a felony burglary charge against a 23- year-old Aurora man who, with an accomplice, allegedly broke into a home in the 500 block of E. Ashland Ave.

Around 4 p.m., Jan. 30, police responded to a 911 call from the resident of the home who reported that two men were breaking in through a rear door. Moments before calling 911, she said the two men knocked at her front door and when she looked out a window, she saw them walk around to the back of the residence. That’s when she heard loud banging so she locked herself in her bedroom and contacted us.

When officers arrived, the two suspects had already left before they could take anything. A responding officer spotted the suspect in the 500 block of Parker, and, based on the description given by the victim, detained him. The officer also talked with a witness who had seen the same man at the victim’s front door.

Charged with burglary is Davonte D. Gregory of the 400 block of Titsworth Court. He is currently being held in the Kane County Lockup on $5,000 bail. Police are still looking for the identity of Gregory’s accomplice.

The victim was not injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call Investigations at 630-256-5500, Crime Stoppers at (630) 892-1000, or submit your tips using our “My PD” app. Calls to Crime Stoppers that lead to an arrest qualify for a cash reward while remaining anonymous.

Deputies warn of IRS tax scams

As tax season approaches, the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind citizens to be aware of potential scammers claiming to represent the Internal Revenue Service.

In recent years, thousands of people have lost millions of dollars and their personal information to tax scams and fake IRS communication.

These scammers claim to be from the IRS and tell intended victims they owe taxes and that their taxes must be paid promptly by using a pre-paid debit card, money order or a wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are often threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license.

In some cases, the scammer becomes hostile and insulting. The victims may also be told they are owed a refund to get them to share private information. Do not give out any information and hang up immediately.

If the phone isn’t answered, the scammers often leave an “urgent” message advising legal action may be taken against them if they do not call back.

The IRS will never:

  • Call to demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you.
  • Threaten to immediately bring in local police or other law enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
  • Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
  • Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or other gift cards.
  • Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

The Kendall County Sheriff’s Office encourages taxpayers to be alert to phone and email scams that use the IRS name. The IRS will never request personal or financial information by email, text, or any social media.

Weather spotter training class announced

The Kendall County Emergency Management Agency (KCEMA) is hosting a Severe Weather Basic spotter training class on Thursday, March 2 at 6:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service will provide this free training at New Life Church located at 3205 Cannonball Trail, Yorkville.

The National Weather Service’s (NWS) primary mission is to save lives and protect property through the issuance of warning for hazardous weather. The NWS trains people to identify severe storms and tornadoes and report to local and county emergency management agencies.

The NWS depends on real-time reports from trained spotters to know exactly what is occurring on the ground and under a storm. This basic training consists of a slide and video program, which teaches spotters about severe storm structure and how to identify cloud features and other environmental clues to identify severe storms and tornadoes. Communication systems and spotter networks are explained so the spotter knows where to report this information.

Who should attend: residents who are age fourth grade and older; Emergency Management, fire, police, public works, school personnel, bus drivers, amateur radio operators, long term care facilities, plant safety personnel, and anybody interested in the weather.
