The men and women of the Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society saved the 765 from becoming a rusting monument in a city park and restored it to operating condition in 1979.

Police Dept. offers free Citizen’s Police Academy classes

The Wheeling Police Department is now accepting applications for its next Citizen’s Police Academy, scheduled to run from September to mid-November. The free classes will meet from 7-9:30 p.m. one night a week at the Wheeling Police Department, 1 Community Boulevard. The Citizen’s Police Academy is designed to provide residents with an inside look at the operations of the police department, and to increase understanding between citizens and the police with regard to law enforcement’s role in the criminal justice system and the tasks police officers face in their daily work. The 10-week course will begin with an orientation, and presentation on the history and organization of the Wheeling Police Department, followed by sessions that will provide information on specific departments — including Patrol, Traffic, Crime Prevention/Community Relations, Forensic Evidence and Investigations. Law enforcement topics will include domestic violence, child abuse, use of force, major crimes and community policing. There will also be a demonstration by Duke, the department’s police canine. Village to host annual Festival of Fine Arts

The village announced that the 14th Annual Deerfield Festival of Fine Arts will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 4 and 5 on Park Avenue, north of Deerfield Road and west of Waukegan Road. The fest will include more than 70 registered artists representing media such as painting, wood, photography, jewelry, fiber, sculpture, mixed media and ceramics. This year’s featured artists are Kent Kraus, a clay sculptor from Santa Fe, N.M.; Rollin Karg, a glass artist from Kechi, Kan.; and oil painter Roger Disney, of Tulsa, Okla. Adams named Community Band director on eve of 40th season

The Mount Prospect Park District announced that the Mount Prospect Community Band will begin its 40th anniversary season under the guidance of new music director Monty Adams, who also serves as conductor and director of the Lakeside Flutes and the Ridgeville Band of Evanston. Adams also has experience as the principal flutist and soloist with the U.S. Air Force Band and Orchestra, in Washington, D.C., and has performed as a regular member of several Chicago Symphony Orchestra chamber ensembles. The Community Band’s Monday Night Series will begin June 13 and run through July 25 (no concert on July 4) at the Veterans Memorial Band Shell, 411 S. Maple Street. Opening night will feature guest master of ceremonies Jonathan Lehrer, and selections will include “Liberty Bell,” “Bugler’s Holiday,” “The Circus Bee” and “West Side Story.” All concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m.; admission is free. Village to host Franklin Park Fest featuring Railroad Day

The village will host its annual Franklin Park Fest featuring Railroad Day (formerly Railroad Daze) June 9-12 at the corner of Franklin Avenue and Calwagner Street. The fest will begin on June 9 with Jazz Night, featuring The Max Clark Band (4:45-5:45 p.m.), the Bobby Lewis Quintet (6:30-8 p.m.) and renowned Steely Dan tribute band Deacon Blues (9-10:30 p.m.). Live entertainment on June 10 includes The New Invaders (6:30-7:45 p.m.) and popular festival band 7th Heaven (8:30-10:30 p.m.), and continues on June 11 with Rosie & The Riveters (11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.), EZFM (1-2;15 p.m.), Classical Blast (3-4:30 p.m.), Anthony Holmes (5:15-6 p.m.), Heartache Tonight (6:45-8:15 p.m.) and Led Zeppelin tribute band Kashmir (9-10:30 p.m.). A daily carnival will open at 5 p.m. June 9 and 10, and at noon June 11 and 12. Railroad Day activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 11. Attendees can view the interiors of a rarely seen collection of trains, including the Nickel Plate Road Locomotive No. 765. Mini train rides for kids, and exhibitors with memorabilia and collectibles, also are included. The fest also will feature food vendors, a beer and wine garden, and a picnic area with benches — or bring lawn chairs or blankets. Admission to Franklin Park Fest is free. Police Dept. offers athletics-based summer youth program

The Park Forest Police Department announced that registration is underway for Police Athletics Activities Center (P.A.A.C.), an athletics-based summer youth program for ages 10-15. The program will be held from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays from June 13 to July 21 at Rich East High School, 300 Sauk Trail. The P.A.A.C. program is designed to teach sportsmanship, leadership and character development through athletic activities. Andrew’s Nolting nets Principal of the Year award

The village announced that Andrew High School Principal Bob Nolting recently was named Illinois High School Principal of the Year by the Illinois Principals Association (IPA). Nolting was recognized by the District 230 School Board during a recent meeting, and will officially be honored at the IPA Conference, in October. Nolting joined District 230 as Associate Principal at Andrew, in 2004, and moved to Sandburg High School, in Orland Park, as Associate Principal, in 2006. He was named as Andrew’s principal in 2009. Prior to joining District 230, Nolting served as a social studies teacher and athletics director at a school district in Wisconsin.
