Election complaint lines established

Kane County voters who observe or experience voting problems or irregularities during the Nov. 8 general election should call the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office to report the problems.

The Election Complaint Line will be available from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Nov. 8.
Anyone who experiences or witnesses any possible illegal election activity, such as electioneering, illegally placed campaign signs or denial of voting rights at any of Kane County’s 228 voting precincts should call the hotline at (630) 208-5328.

The hotline will be staffed by representatives of the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office. Assistant state’s attorneys will take the complaints about potential violations of Illinois election laws and are prepared to travel to polling places to ensure compliance with state election laws.

“Voters have a right to expect an honest, fair and orderly election, and a fair opportunity to choose their elected leaders,” Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon said. “Our staff will be available to all who have concerns.

“Although this has been an emotionally charged campaign season, we are confident that voters and candidates will follow the law in the days leading up to the election and throughout the election process. We have never found a notable violation of election laws in the years we have had this complaint line, and we expect that to remain the case.”
Voters should note that this hotline is not for election questions, such as polling times and places. Voters in need of election information should call the Kane County Clerk’s Election Help Line at (630) 232-5990. Eligible voters must be registered, a United States citizen and at least 18 years old.

Somonauk

Somonauk officer rescues residents from fire

Somonauk Police Officer Steve Kuester is credited with saving the lives of two Somonauk residents who were asleep inside their home on Oct. 18 when it caught fire.

According to the department, Kuester was on patrol around 11:45 p.m. when he noticed a smell of smoke then observed smoke coming from the residential area north of East Market Street, specifically from a house at 125 Cook Court.

Kuester called the fire department, went to the front door and alerted the residents who were asleep inside. Both residents were checked out by Somonauk, Sandwich EMS personnel. Firefighters extinguished the fire in minutes after their arrival, and also kept the fire from spreading into the house keeping it confined to the attached garage area, however the house sustained considerable smoke damage.

Although smoke detectors were present, they were not operable at the time of the fire. Estimated damage is about $30,000 to the garage structure and contents of the home.
For his efforts, Kuester will be presented with the Somonauk Police Department Life Saving Award at the November Village Board Meeting.
