Pedestrian struck, killed by train

On March 21, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Kane County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to a train vs. pedestrian accident near Maple Park. The initial investigation indicates that a 20-year-old man was walking east down the middle of Union Pacific Rail Road tracks about a half mile east of the town of Maple Park in unincorporated Virgil Township.

As a west bound train approached him he failed to get off of the tracks and was struck by the train. The man, John Berens, 200 block of Charles Street, Maple Park, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Detectives are not sure why he was walking down the tracks or if he was aware of the approaching train.  The Union Pacific line was shut down until about 6:30 a.m. as the accident was investigated.
