Eureka College Provost Participates in National Leadership Development Program

EUREKA – Eureka College Provost and Dean of the College Philip Acree Cavalier was among 20 senior academic administrators in higher education selected by the Council of Independent Colleges and the American Academic Leadership Institute to participate in the 2012 Colloquium on Leadership for Chief Academic Officers titled “Classical and Contemporary Reading.” The colloquium was July 17–21 in Annapolis, Md.

The goal of the colloquium was to prepare chief academic officers for changes and challenges in the decades ahead, understand complex and unprecedented situations and further develop strategic wisdom, according to Cavalier.
“The colloquium provided an occasion for me to discuss and debate, with chief academic officers from around the nation, the complex challenges facing higher education in the 21st century. The opportunity to explore new ideas about leadership with them, share our experiences, and reflect on our roles as leaders and collaborators on campus was invaluable,” he said.
John Churchill, the secretary of the Phi Beta Kappa Society, was the colloquium leader.
Cavalier was named Eureka College Provost June 1, 2009. He formerly was an associate professor of American literature and dean of general education at Catawba College, Salisbury, N.C. A Fulbright Scholar, he has a bachelor’s degree in economics from Swarthmore College, Swarthmore, Pa.; a master’s degree in English with honors from Northeastern University, Boston; and a doctorate in English from State University of New York, Buffalo.
