Great Souls Film Series: “Gandi”

“Gandhi” is the acclaimed 1982 biographical drama about the major events in the life of Mohandas Gandhi, the beloved Indian leader who stood against British rule over his country. Dedicated to the concept of nonviolent resistance, Gandhi is initially dismissed by English officials, but eventually, he and his cause become internationally renowned, and his gatherings of passive protest move India towards independence. 

Opening night for “Sugar”
7:30 p.m.
Stage Coach Theatre, 126 S. 5th St., DeKalb

The play, “Sugar,” is based on the movie, “Some Like It Hot,” made famous by Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis. Trouble starts for two unemployed musicians, bass player Jerry and saxophone player Joe, when they witness the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in Chicago. In order to escape the gangsters, they dress as women and join Sweet Sue and Her Society Syncopaters, an all-female band about to leave town. While Joe pretends to be a millionaire to win the band’s sexy singer, Sugar, Jerry finds himself pursued by a real millionaire as things heat up and the mobsters close in. Other performances are slated for 7:30 p.m. April 14 and April 19-April 21; and matinees will be perfomed at 2 p.m. April 15 and April 22.

OCB Naturals Bodybuilding and Figure Competition

The Egyptian Theatre will host the Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders (OCB) Midwest States Competition. Categories Include bikini, women’s figure, men’s physique, men’s classic physique and men’s bodybuilding.

April 15

Trumpet Duet

Free

NIU alumni Garth Anderson and Sam Oliveri will perform as a trumpet duet featuring Mark Ponzo, of the NIU School of Music Faculty. The selections will include Trumpet Concerto No. 1 in Eb Major by Johann Wilhelm Hertel and Concerto in F, Op. 9, No. 3 by Tomaso Albinoni, among others. The performance can also be viewed in live webcast.

Gardening for Beginners

Blumen’s first in a series of gardening classes will be all about vegetable seeds for cool and warm season planted in a container, a raised garden or a large garden in your yard.

“Intentions” Opening Night

The Tillerman House isn’t just a house, it’s an intentional community. If something there isn’t local, sustainable, home-grown, fair-trade, and cruelty-free, someone will certainly hear about it. The house’s residents live together in seemingly perfect harmony until the ex-frat bro Leif comes barging in with his “Family Guy” DVDs and affinity for Sports Illustrated. Can the fragile Tillerman community survive Leif? This new comedy examines the lengths people will go to and the lies they will tell for both principles and desires. Performances also will be given at 7:30 p.m. April 19, April 20 and April 21; matinees will be performed at 2 p.m. April 21 and April 22.
