An Oswego man who evaded police the morning of Sept. 20  by jumping into the Fox River, was arrested following a multi-jurisdictional search.

Terence Evans, 28, 500 block of Springbrook Trail, was taken into custody after an officer spotted him the river and later pulled him to shore.

According to North Aurora Police Department Deputy Chief Scott Buziecki, the incident began around 8:30 a.m. when a North Aurora officer who was on patrol noticed a suspicious vehicle at an apartment complex the area of Butterfield Road and Laurel Drive.

Knowing that there had been a recent rash of vehicle burglaries in the area, the officer went to investigate the vehicle and saw the driver walk through the parking lot and away from the car, police said. Shortly afterward, a witness approached the officer and informed him that the van was not supposed to be parked at the complex. The officer remained near the vehicle until the driver returned.

The driver provided officers with a name, but they suspected it was false and that the man had potential warrants out for his arrest, Buziecki said. As the officers were waiting to receive a photo to positively identify the man in front of them, the suspect fled the scene on foot.

North Aurora officers chased the man, later positively identified as Evans, westbound on Butterfield Road and into a wooded area north of Village Hall, 25 E. State St.

Evans continued northbound and was running near a bike trail along the Fox River when officers lost sight of him, Buziecki said.

Additional officers, including members of the Aurora Police Department, were called in to search the area for the suspect. During that search, an Aurora Police officer spotted a man in the Fox River, north of the dam by North Aurora Village Hall.

The officer, concerned with the man’s proximity to the dam, called for a water rescue. However, Evans surrendered and swam close enough to shore for the officer to pull him onto the river bank.

Officers were able to positively identify the man as Evans and learned he had three outstanding misdemeanor warrants for his arrest on charges of Larceny, Harassment by Telephone, and Escape from a Peace Officer, Buziecki said.

He was additionally charged with misdemeanor Obstructing Identification, and felony Aggravated Resisting a Peace Officer with Bodily Harm because an officer was injured while pursuing Evans.

The officer suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported by North Aurora Fire Department ambulance to Presence Mercy Center for treatment and then transported to the North Aurora Police Department.

Evans was transported to Presence Mercy Center by Batavia Fire Department ambulance and later released and to the custody of North Aurora police.
