Sheriffs’ Association warns of telemarketing scam

The Illinois Sheriffs’ Association is advising residents that there is currently underway a phone campaign fraudulently using the name of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association in their solicitation.

The Sheriffs’ Association never solicits by phone but does conduct a direct mail campaign throughout the state of Illinois endorsed by the individual Sheriffs across Illinois. Telemarketing fraud costs billions of dollars each year.

Phone solicitors who want you to “act immediately” or are offering a “too good to be true” opportunity are most likely fraudulent. Remember that if you have any doubts, or are highly pressured – Just Hang Up.

The Sheriffs of Illinois, through the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association, are adamantly opposed to police groups and associations using telemarketers in their fundraising efforts.

Should anyone receive a call from someone saying they represent your local sheriff or the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association and are asking for donations contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately or gather as much information as you can from the caller and report it to the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association at ISA@ilsheriff.org

Fireworks likely cause of house fire

Fireworks are apparently to blame for a small fire that broke out at an Oswego home on July 5.

According to fire officials, firefighters responded to a 911 call shortly after midnight to a home in the 100 block of Laurie Lane. They arrived to find a neighbor was using a garden hose to extinguish a blaze on the back exterior of the home.

Fire officials said the occupants of the home had safely evacuated prior to firemen arriving on the scene,

About 10 gallons of water from an extinguisher was used to control the fire, which was confided to the exterior of the home. It was later determined that fireworks were the possible cause. Damage was set at about $10,000.

Happy Helpers honored for volunteerism

Happy Helpers is an organization focused on “leading kids to change the world” by coordinating volunteering opportunities in the community.

It is approaching its one-year anniversary and in this short amount of time, they have organized over 800 volunteer hours for children ages 5-17 to fulfill with their families.

With over 500 children in Happy Helpers, we are excited about the impact they can make to local charities. The organization’s top volunteers were honored at a recent Village Board meeting.

Tyler Koopman, a 13-year-old incoming freshman at Oswego East, topped the charts and completed 29.5 hours of service. Koopman has volunteered for his church, as a member of a youth group (including multiple mission trips), for the Oswego Kiwanis chapter, and in other capacities within the community in addition to being active in Happy Helpers since its inception.

Tyler enjoys learning about how different community service organizations function behind the scenes through volunteering. His favorite Happy Helpers volunteer activity this year was making sleeping mats for the homeless out of plastic shopping bags. He also enjoyed volunteering at Feed My Starving Children.
