United Way breakfast announced

The Fox Valley United Way Annual Breakfast to honor those who have given of their time, talent or resources to help  community members in need will be held Thursday, May 18 from 7-9:30 p.m. at Pipers Banquets, 295 Butterfield Rd., Aurora.

Sheriff’s Deputy graduates from academy

On March 31, Kendall County Sheriff’s Deputy Lee Cooper graduated from the Suburban Law Enforcement Academy, located at the College of DuPage in Glenn Ellyn. Cooper attended the 12 week, 480 hour basic police academy.

The next step in the training process for Deputy Cooper will be to complete the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office field training program.

Cooper will be paired with an experienced Field Training Officer and will undergo a rigorous 12-week field training program, designed to put the knowledge acquired in the academy into practical use.

Cooper is a graduate of Oswego High School and is a third generation law enforcement officer following in the footsteps of his grandfather and father, both retired law enforcement officers.

Scam Awareness Day at Senior Center

Join us at the Oswego Senior Center, 156 E. Washington St., as we explore Scams, Schemes and Seedy things happen through the mail, phone, internet and at your door.  The event will be held on May 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

This year Kendall County TRIAD is going to start it off by performing “The Bird Cage” then the Attorney General’s Office will speak about Identity theft and Prevention. You will then be available to speak about local schemes and scams, verifying utility workers, local law enforcement (what to expect) and minimizing vulnerability. Lunch will be provided thanks to Rep. Batinick and Rep. Wheeler. Those interested in attending should RSVP by May 1 at (630) 554-5602.

Congrats to District 308’s Robotics Team

The FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition team, Gear it Forward 2338, earned a spot at the World Championships to be held in St. Louis April 26-29.

The team won the Chairman’s Award for the third straight year at the Midwest Regional held at UIC in Chicago. The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, as it recognizes the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the purpose and goals of FIRST.

In addition, the team’s robot was a consistent force to be reckoned with during competition and finished as part of the number 5-ranked alliance. Students from Oswego East and Oswego High Schools make up this team. The team is sponsored by Community Unit School District 308, Caterpillar, and Navistar.

The mission of FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders, by engaging them in exciting mentor-based programs that build science, engineering, and technology skills, inspire innovation, and foster well-rounded life capabilities including self-confidence, communication, and leadership.

Community Garage Sale sign-up continues

The Village of Oswego’s Environmentally Conscious Oswego (ECO) Commission will sponsor the Oswego Community Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday May 12–13.

Residents may sign-up at the Oswego Village Hall beginning on Monday, April 3 to be included in the advertising for the Community Garage Sale. The fee to be included in advertising is $15. Once the fee is paid, the participant will receive a sign and yard stake to place in their yard during their sale. The list of those participating in the Community Garage Sale will be published in the Ledger-Sentinel and on the Village’s website on the Thursday prior to the sale. The cut-off date to sign-up is Friday, April 21 to be included in the advertisement.

After the sale, your garage sale sign and yard stake can be returned to the Oswego Village Hall for a $10 refund.  All signs must be returned by Friday, May 26.

AARP Smart Driver Course

The enhanced course is based on the latest driver safety research and insights. Take the course at Senior Services Associates, where participants will learn evidence-based safe driving strategies, and refresh your knowledge of the latest rules and hazards of the road. After course completion, participants may be eligible for a multi-year car insurance discount.

Those in the class will learn defensive driving techniques, proven safety strategies, and new traffic laws and rules of the road. Plus, there are no tests to pass.

This class will be offered at Senior Services Associates at 908 Game Farm Road, Yorkville on Monday, May 8 and Wednesday, May 10 from 1-5 p.m.
