The Life of Riley: Resolutions

by Jerry Riley

Yes, 2015 is right around the corner. Well, actually it starts at midnight, tonight. Time to think about your New Year’s Resolutions. The first thing to remember is most of them just last a few months. Only about 8% of the people actually keep them. Think about resolutions you have made in the past. I’ll bet everyone says they are going to lose weight. Did you? Exercise more? Tell you what, get a block of wood. Set it on the floor. Walk around it. You can now tell people you walked around the block!

There are a couple we could all make, and keep. Gain weight and spend more! Yeah, what a revoltin’ development this is, that we WILL keep them! Resolutions can be made anytime, and ignored just as quickly, but New Year’s seems to be the time most people make them.

Maybe we could take a hint from a recent column, ‘Unhealthy Habits’ and try to be more careful in public and remember that we could be role models for children who might observe our actions.

If you make resolutions, you always want to make them positive. More important, though, is to make them realistic – it might make them easier to keep. Remember, don’t live in yesterday, but don’t forget it and screw up tomorrow. Of course, I can paraphrase an old saying, “be careful what you wish for.” Remember, the two worst things can be not getting what you wished for, and, getting what you wished for!

My resolutions? Some of the old ones are no longer realistic as I grow older…  not more mature. I’ll review my activities and disengage myself from whatever might be sucking the life out of me. Might not be a bad idea for everyone to think about.
