Village to host annual Memorial Day event

The village announced that it will hold its 8th annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10:45 a.m. May 30 at the Elk Grove Park District Pavilion, 1000 Wellington Ave. The event — hosted by the village, with the support of American Legion Post 216, VFW Post 9284 and its Ladies Auxiliary — will include the traditional Placing of Wreaths (conducted by various community organizations), a flag-folding ceremony (conducted by the Police and Fire Honor Guard), as well as a gun salute and a performance by the Elk Grove Village Big Band. Metropolis announces slate for 2016-17 season

The Metropolis Performing Arts Centre, 111 W. Campbell Street, has announced its schedule for the 2016-17 season. “The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein,” a mad-cap musical based on Brooks’ classic comedic film, will run from Sept. 20 to Nov. 6; “Rosencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead,” a comedy about two minor characters from Shakespeare’s “Hamlet,” will run from Feb. 2 to March 19, 2017; “Hair,” the renowned musical examining the era of hippie counterculture in the 1960s, will run from May 18 to July 2, 2017; and “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a five-time Tony Award-winning play written as a prequel to “Peter Pan,” will run from July 13 to Aug. 20, 2017. Tickets are $30 for previews and $38 for regular runs. A special four-show subscription package is available for $84 (previews) and $106.40 (regular runs), and a three-show subscription is available for $67.50 (previews) and $85.50 (regular runs). History Center seeks photos for community project

The Des Plaines History Center, 781 Pearson St., is inviting residents of all ages to participate in a community photo project, entitled, “On the Street Where You Live, Work, and Play.” Community members can submit up to three photos of their house, a favorite building or any interesting structure in Des Plaines to www.desplainesmemory.org. Photos also can be scanned at the History Center from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Tuesday through Friday, and 1-4 p.m. on Sundays. All submissions should include a brief description of the image, a memory of the scene or a statement about why the photo is meaningful. Submitted photos will be posted online, and displayed in a traveling mural and a sculptural work. Photos will be accepted until July 31. The project is sponsored by the History Center, the Des Plaines Arts Council, Des Plaines Memory and the Des Plaines Public Library, and is being held in conjunction with the History Center’s current exhibit, “Des Plaines Architecture: An Exhibit About Our Homes and City.” For more information, call (847) 391-5399, send and email to contact@desplaineshistory.org or visit www.desplaines history.org.

Fremd volleyball coach Pinley reaches victory milestone   

A report stated that Fremd High School boys volleyball head coach Curt Pinley recorded his 800th career win during a Vikings’ victory over Mid-Suburban League rival Hoffman Estates on April 5, ranking him among the top seven for most wins in Illinois High School Association (IHSA) history. Pinley began his volleyball coaching career at Palatine High School, and compiled a record of 136-130 as boys coach from 1992-99. Since becoming both the boys and girls head coach at Fremd, in 2000, Pinley has registered 381 victories as girls coach and 283 at the boys’ helm. Originally a basketball coach at Milford (Ill.) High School, Pinley was a basketball and track coach at Fremd before switching to volleyball.

Palos Hills

City announces start of Beautification Contest

The city announced that its 2016 Beautification Contest is underway. Judges will rate properties in the following categories: general appearance of buildings, fencing and edging, and overall landscaping (including lawns, shrubs, evergreens, trees and color accents). Residents can nominate their own homes, as well as neighbors’ homes, or a local business, church or school. All winning entries will receive a Certificate of Recognition at a City Council meeting, and a lawn sign. In addition, each city ward will have a Grand Prize winner entered into a raffle. The raffle prize will be donated by a local business. Nominations can be sent via email to recreation@paloshillsweb.org, or mailed to Community Resource Department, 8455 W. 103rd St., Palos Hills, Ill. 60465. Nominations also can be dropped off at the same address. All entries must be received by 5 p.m. July 15. Crews to conduct fieldwork for flood control project

The village reported that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) currently is engaged in the final design of flood control project on Natalie Creek. To assist with the effort, Burns & McDonnell Engineering Co., Inc. will be conducting field reconnaissance and survey work in the vicinity of Natalie Creek, in Midlothian and Oak Forest. The purpose of the field study is to collect and analyze data for the final design of the project, intended to address flooding identified in the vicinity of Natalie Creek. Field crews may require access to properties for less than one hour between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., and may be required to stake flags to identify certain physical features related to the project. Veterans Memorial student Bravo nets scholarship award

The village reported that David Bravo, an eighth-grader at Veterans Memorial Middle School, has been selected as a 2016 Carson Scholar. The Carson Scholars Fund awards scholarships to students in fourth through 11th grade who excel academically and are dedicated to serving their communities. A total of 625 students nationwide were selected as first-time recipients of the award in 2016. Bravo, a straight-A student and a member of the Veterans Memorial Student Council, will receive a $1,000 scholarship toward his college education. He was honored during the Chicago Awards Banquet, held May 1, in Oak Lawn.
