SUB 091416 aurora shooting COLORA 64-year-old Aurora man was shot and killed early Sunday morning inside a home on the city’s near West Side, Aurora police said.

Samuel Smith, Jr., was pronounced dead around 1:22 a.m. at an Aurora hospital, about an hour after police were called to his home in the 800 block of Iowa Avenue for reports of a gunshot victim.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, police responded to the home around 12:35 a.m. and found Smith suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was transported to Presence Mercy Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives have interviewed Smith’s 73-year-old live-in girlfriend, who was the only other person inside the home, and was asleep on the home’s second floor when the shooting occurred. Both she and another person reported hearing more than one gunshot being fired at the time of the shooting.

On Sunday afternoon, Ferrelli said the investigation was still in its preliminary stages and that police are continuing to process evidence.

He noted that detectives have several working theories but no firm motives as of yet and are unsure if Smith was a target.
