Authorities have charged a Geneva woman with intentionally poisoning her husband.
Julia L. Gutierrez, 53, has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Eduardo Gutierrez, 53, whose body was found in their Crissey Avenue home on Jan. 28. Julia Gutierrez was taken into custody on Jan. 31.
Eduardo Gutierrez’s body was found around 6:19 p.m. on Jan. 28 when Geneva police officers responded after receiving a request for a well-being check from a person who is not being identified. Police do say the call was placed by someone who was not inside the home.
When police arrived, they found Eduardo deceased and Julia was also home. She also was in need of medical assistance and was taken to a local hospital, according to reports.
On Jan. 29, Geneva police, with assistance of the Kane County Major Crimes Task Force, conducted a search of the home and an autopsy was done with toxicology samples sent to a forensic lab, according to the Kane County Coroner’s Office.
Authorities say Julia Gutierrez mixed Temazepam, a sedative for treating insomnia, into a drink and gave it to her husband, which he consumed, according to reports.
She was in court on Feb. 2 and a bond hearing was set for the morning of Feb. 3 .
Gutierrez, if convicted, would face between 20 and 60 years in prison.
