St. Charles father killed teen daughters and injured wife before taking own life
By Jack McCarthy Chronicle Media — March 11, 2017St. Charles police say Randall Coffland fatally shot his two 16-year-old twin daughters, injured his wife and then took his own life in a horrific incident that played out during two 911 emergency calls late last week.
Police said the bodies of Coffland, 48, and his daughters were all found with single gunshot wounds to their heads while his wife, Anjum, was shot in the legs and hospitalized.
On Sunday, Police provided an update on the shootings as well as two calls made to 911 emergency dispatchers.
“One of the calls (was) from Anjum Coffland,” police said in a statement. “She tells the dispatcher that her husband shot her kids. She also says that he shot her in the legs. Another call was made by Randall Coffland. Randall clearly tells the dispatcher that he shot and killed his two kids and he shot his wife. He then said he was going to shoot himself.”
The shootings occurred in a condominium in the 400 block of South First St. where Coffland and his daughters, Brittany and Tiffany Coffland, lived.
Anjum Coffland lived at another location in St. Charles.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that this is a domestic related incident,” St. Charles police said in statements posted on the city web site last Friday.
Police responded at 5:12 p.m. last Friday to reports of shots fired in the 400 block of South 1st St. Police initially said a 911 call was made from inside the residence and on Sunday said two calls were made.
According to St. Charles police, Anjum and Randall Coffland were married but living at separate addresses.
“A review of the Department records show that officers responded to the 100 block of S 5th Ave on February 9, 2017, for a report of domestic trouble,” police said. “The report indicates that nothing physical happened during this incident.”
St. Charles Mayor Ray Rogina called on the community the stand together and provide calm and peace.
“The City of St. Charles experienced a horrific personal tragedy last night,” Rogina said in a statement. “Being the close-knit community we are, an incident of this nature has impact beyond the immediate family–we think about and pray for the extended family which includes relatives, high school students and other friends.”
