Oswego Village President-elect Gail Johnson announced April 20 she would not renew the contract of Steve Jones as village administrator. Johnson will be sworn in as village president May 5.

Jones was hired as village administrator in April 2012.

Johnson said the decision to not renew the employment agreement was not based on dissatisfaction with Jone’s job performance.

“I have been given an awesome responsibility. Part of that responsibility requires that I thoughtfully consider the leadership team that will take Oswego forward,” she said in a statement. “It is a very common practice when there is a significant change at the elected board level to make a change in the administrative level. After thoughtful consideration I made the decision not to renew Steve Jones’ contract.”

Johnson has stated she wants the newly-elected village trustees to work with her in hiring someone new.

Johnson, who had been a village trustee since 2011, defeated fellow trustee Tony Giles for the village president post in the April 7 election. Oswego voters also elected three new trustees, Ryan Kauffman, Joe West and Karin McCarthy.
