Recent busts add to drug and property seizures

A recent flurry of narcotics-related arrests, search warrants and asset seizures has kept the McHenry County Sheriff’s Police Narcotics Task Force busy along, with several cooperating local jurisdictions, and pushed dramatically upward the totals of assets seized and narcotics confiscated this year, Sheriff Bill Prim said Thursday.

A total of $345,000 in U.S. currency combined with the estimated dollar value of real estate, vehicles and other property is now more than $865,000 for 2015.

In addition to a joint investigation with the Lake County Sheriff’s Gang Task Force earlier this week that resulted in the arrest and charging of a McHenry County man, and the confiscation of about $240,000 in U.S. currency, the MCSO Narcotics Task Force served two search warrants Tuesday and Wednesday in Crystal Lake and unincorporated Wonder Lake, respectively.

A routine traffic stop Tuesday night in Crystal Lake led hours later to the search warrant there. The combined amounts of narcotics and cash found in the car and the home was 135 grams of cocaine; 184 grams of cannabis; 32 amphetamines pills; 52 hydrocodone pills; 5 of alprazolam; 3 of clonazepam; 1 of vyvanse and over $3,200 in U.S. currency.

Following up on information obtained during that operation led to the Wonder Lake search warrant, which netted an additional 45 grams of cannabis.

The investigation continues into the Crystal Lake motorist, who is the owner of the home there, and another individual who owns the Wonder Lake residence.

“We have also seen significant numbers of weapons taken off the streets,” Prim said. “Over the past six months we have seized 7 assault rifles, 10 handguns and 2 shotguns.”

Two private residences and a total of 41 vehicles add to the mounting tally since Jan. 1. “We are confident that none of this property or equipment will ever return to the wrong hands to be used for ongoing, large-scale criminal enterprises,” Prim said, “which is the best result of all.”
