Donald Trump was declared the winner Tuesday night in the Illinois primary election for president.

Trump continued his march to the nomination by posting a big win here, over Sen. Ted Cruz and former Ohio Gov. John Kasich.

The frontrunner won big over his rivals despite the controversy that dogged his campaign following fights that broke out between supporters and protestors during a scheduled stop at University of Illinois Chicago on March 11.

Trump ended up cancelling that event.

Trump was the projected winner with 40 percent of the Republican votes followed by Cruz and Kasich.

Illinois is one of five states holding primary elections today, March 15. The other contests are in Missouri, Ohio, North Carolina and Florida.
