Adam Belmont, 26 of Northlake, has been sentenced to 47 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) for the stabbing death and sexual assault of his former girlfriend Alyssa Van Meter, of Woodridge. On May 4, 2015, Belmont entered a blind plea of guilty to one count of First Degree Murder and one count of Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault in front of Judge Liam Brennan, who handed down today’s sentence.

On December 15, 2012, at approximately 11:30 p.m., Woodridge police officers responded to a burglary/death investigation call on Forest Drive. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Van Meter deceased on the bedroom floor of her apartment. She ha been stabbed once in the chest.

An investigation into the murder conducted by the Wooddridge Police Department revealed that at approximately 9 p.m. that evening, Belmont went to Van Meter’s apartment complex and gained entry into her apartment by climbing up the outside balcony and climbing through a window. Once inside the apartment a physical altercation between the two ensued in which Belmont choked Van Meter until she was unconscious. After choking Van Meter, Belmont then stabbed her one time in the chest, piercing her heart. After stabbing Van Meter, Belmont sexually assaulted her. Following the murder, Belmont fled the scene. He was arrested later that evening without incident.

“For the brutal murder and sexual assault of Alyssa Van Meter, Adam Belmont will spend the next 47 years of his life away from society where he will be unable to harm anyone,” said DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin. “This was a horrific crime that will continue to weigh heavily on the shoulders of Alyssa’s family and friends for years to come. It is my sincerest hope that Alyssa’s loved ones will be able to move forward in their lives with happy memories of Alyssa. I would like to thank the Woodridge Police Department for their outstanding efforts in this very disturbing case. I would also like to thank Assistant State’s Attorneys Steve Knight and Demetri Demopoulos for their efforts in holding Adam Belmont responsible for the murder and sexual assault of Alyssa Van Meter.”

Belmont received a sentence of 35 years in the IDOC to be served at 100% for the murder and 12 years served at 85% in the IDOC for the Aggravated Criminal Sexual Assault.  The sentences will be served consecutively resulting in the 47 year sentence.
