The Rockford Park District is seeking a state grant to develop a “silent sports” facility in the community.

The district was scheduled to submit a grant application this week for a near $200,000 award from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Trails Grants-in-Aid program. The figure represents up to 80 percent of costs while the park district would match 20 percent, or around $49,500.

A group of outdoor enthusiasts had approached the district about developing an outdoor facility at Atwood Park, 2685 New Milford School Road, for mountain biking, hiking, rail running, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wildlife observation, biking, and other activities.

“We have a long history of working closely with community groups to provide the best possible product,” said Laurie Anderson, Deputy Director of Recreation. “We are encouraged with the local support this project is receiving and will continue efforts to expand outdoor recreation options that appeal to all ages and interests.”

Atwood’s unique topography encompasses woodland, prairie, river, and marsh habitats, making it an ideal site for outdoor, year-round pursuits.

Completed trails will complement the existing Atwood Center by bringing a host of new options for outdoor recreational and educational programming for children.

The overall plan includes the development of 8 to 12 miles of trails (including new and rehabilitated trails) but will be divided into three phases.

Phase 1 includes the development of three vault restrooms. Phase 2 includes the development of trails on the south side of the park, the pump track on the north end, and the addition of a water source for drinking water and bike washing. Phase 3 will bring the development of trails on the north side of the park. In all, the trail system will include a perimeter trail, approx. 10-feet wide, ideal for multi-purpose use, and sized to accommodate cross-country grooming equipment.

The interior park trails will vary from traditional single-track offerings to wider flow trails with purpose-built features such as rollers, gap-less jumps, and berms. The interior trails will range from beginner to more advanced riders, to suit all skill levels.
