Long Grove
Park Dist. nets grant to break Indian Creek logjams
The village reported that in an effort to dismantle the 21 logjams currently impeding the flow of Indian Creek across the Long Grove Park District’s 57-acre Long View Meadow wildlife area (at the corner of Route 22 and Route 83), the park district recently won a matching grant from the Lake County Stormwater Management Board, with support from the Village of Long Grove and Vernon Township. Logjams result in the backup of water upstream, poor drainage, and increased risk of flooding. In addition, water flow around the edges of logjams causes stream bank erosion, which is carried into lakes and falls to the bottom, eventually converting lakes into shallow marshland that will submerge surrounding areas. The added silt is harmful to fish and aquatic invertebrates that represent the food supply for birds and mammals, and Long View Meadow is a significant migrating bird site, with more than 160 species spotted in the last year. Dismantling of the logjams is expected to be finished by the end of 2016. For more information, call (847) 634-9440 or visit www.longgrove.net.
