Kane County hopes to reinstate electrics recycling at a future date, but that could come with charges for drop-off of old TVs and computer monitors.

Kane County has suspended its free electronics recycling program after handling what is described as a “tsunami” of old televisions and unmanageable attendance at spring events.

Free recycling will continue — including an event this Saturday at the Kane County Branch Court office at 540 S. Randall Road — but no electronics will be accepted.

That event will from from 9 a.m.-noon and will accept books, a variety of items for free recycling as well as acceptance of liquid latex paint for charges ranging from $2 to $10 depending on size. Free document shredding will also be available.

The county hopes to reinstate electrics recycling at a future date, but it would come likely come with charges for drop-off of old TVs and computer monitors.

Another condition for restoration would be additional electronics drop-off locations. Other electronics recycling locations have closed over the past year.

“The long-term sustainable solution lies in spreading the load and providing conveniently located drop-offs with weekday hours,” the county said in a statement.
