Retired Stevenson Supt. Kanold earns Heritage Award
Stevenson High School announced that retired Superintendent Dr. Timothy D. Kanold recently received the 2016-17 Heritage Award from the District 125 Board of Education. The Heritage Award is presented annually to individuals who have made a significant impact on the school. Since its inception in 1985, recipients have included former faculty and staff, community members and alumni. Kanold, who joined Stevenson in 1986, served as the school’s mathematics director for 16 years, and also oversaw the science division for seven of those years. During his tenure, Kanold revolutionized math teaching at Stevenson by creating collaborative teaching teams and revamping classroom layouts from the traditional design featuring desks in a row to desks grouped in fours to encourage greater student participation. Student scores on the math portion of ACT tests ranked among the highest in Illinois during Kanold’s tenure. In 2001, Kanold was promoted to assistant superintendent at Stevenson, and served as superintendent from 2002 through 2007. He also is a past president of the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, and co-authored several best-selling math textbooks, including his most recent book, “Heart! Fully Forming Your Professional Life as a Teacher and Leader,” published in March. Kanold currently serves as an adjunct faculty member for Loyola University’s graduate school.
