CLC’s Science Building earns ‘green’ innovation award

The College of Lake County’s new Science Building, scheduled to open later this year at CLC’s Grayslake Campus, recently received an exclusive Emerald Award for Building Innovation from the Illinois chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council. CLC received the award for unique sustainability approaches to a traditionally energy-intensive building type. Sustainable features include 187 photovoltaic solar panels, a 1,500-square-foot green roof that reduces rainwater runoff and reduces temperatures of the roof surface, a geothermal heat exchange system designed to reduce energy costs by 20 to 50 percent, south-facing windows with solar shades designed to maximize sunlight indoors during the winter and shade the rooms during the summer, and others. The three-story, 41,900-square-foot science building, designed to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification standards, houses engineering and photonics labs on the first floor, and chemistry labs on the second and third floors. The Science Building is part of a $28.3 million Illinois Capital Development Board project that includes 25,000 square feet of space in A Wing.
