This year’s featured garden at Garden Walk 2017 July 8 presented by the University of Illinois Extension McHenry County Master Gardeners and McHenry County College is that of Susan and Glenn Wayman. The Waymans have collected and planted a large diversity of plants in their yard, as well as a remarkably large number of plants. They estimate that there are more than 12,000 perennials in the garden. Purchase your tickets the day of the walk at the Extension Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden at McHenry Community College for $17. Dept. of Health offers wellness screening program
The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has launched a new program providing wellness screenings and health education appointments (on the first Wednesday of each month) at MCDH’s Crystal Lake facility, 100 N. Virginia Street. Participants can have their cholesterol and blood sugar screened for a $25 fee. In addition, blood pressure and heart-age checks, and body mass analysis screening, will be available free of charge. Tests are non-fasting and private, with results available immediately. Tests results will be given to clients in order to share them with doctors. Appointments are available from 1-4 p.m. in July and September, and from 9 a.m. to noon in August. Dist. 155 names Kim to human resources post
Community School District 155’s Board of Education approved Tom Kim as the new assistant superintendent of human resources, effective July 1. Kim has 17 years of education experience in multiple roles, including associate principal for curriculum and instruction at Grayslake Central High School, athletic director, social studies teacher, and most recently as principal at Huntley Middle School, in DeKalb. He holds a bachelor’s degree from North Park University and a masters in education leadership from Aurora University. O’Brien to perform in First Fridays Concerts series
The McHenry County Conservation District’s First Fridays Concerts series, held at the Lost Valley Visitor Center Patio, Glacial Park, Route 31 and Harts Road, continues with a performance by Mackenzie O’Brien at 7 p.m. July 7. O’Brien, a rising folk/country/rock musician from McHenry County, will perform a variety of covers — from newer country

Village of Fox Lake to host fundraiser for Venetian Night
The village announced that the 2017 Venetian Night Fundraiser will be held at 6 p.m. July 12 at Dockers Restaurant, 33 W. Grand Ave. The event, being held in support of the 10th Annual Venetian Night (6 p.m. to midnight Aug. 5), includes a live and silent auction, the “Barrel O’ Booze” raffle and live entertainment. A $25 donation includes two beverages of choice and appetizers. Venetian Night features a boat parade on Pistakee Lake, a block party and an after-party fireworks show. Crystal Lake Library to host special program on foster parenting
The Crystal Lake Public Library, 126 Paddock Street, will present a special adult program, Becoming a Foster Parent, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. July 12. The program will provide an overview of the foster care program in Illinois and outline the necessary steps to becoming a foster parent. In addition, Dr. Cheryl Stenzel, director of the Allendale Association’s Specialized and Traditional Foster Care Program, will be on hand — along with a foster parent — to talk about essential training and support provided for foster parents of children with emotional and behavioral problems. City of Woodstock to host open house meeting on intersection project
The city announced that it will host an open house meeting concerning a proposed plan for the intersection of South Street, Madison Street and Lake Avenue from 5-7 p.m. July 13 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 121 W. Calhoun Street. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss a project intended to replace the existing all-way-stop controlled intersection with a modern roundabout, and obtain public input. Project exhibits will be on display for review, and attendees will have an opportunity to provide comments in an open house-style format. City representatives, and consultants, will be available to discuss the project and answer any questions. Algonquin
Village of Algonquin to begin Downtown Algonquin project
The village announced that preliminary work for the Downtown Algonquin redevelopment project is set to begin in August. The work will include overhead utility relocation along Main Street — from Edward Street south to Route 31/Prairie Trail. Overhead utilities will be under-grounded to allow for future streetscape, pedestrian and lighting improvements on the surface of Main Street. Work will be performed on a block-by-block basis with intermittent traffic and parking restrictions in place. Access to area businesses will be maintained throughout the duration of construction. Up-to-date construction details will be available online at www.algonquin.org/construction as the project progresses. Additionally, starting in the winter months, water main and sanitary sewer replacement work will be performed on the same section of road as part of a total of $6.3 million of improvements scheduled for the upcoming year. McHenry VFW to host Support Our Veterans Craft & Vendor Show
VFW Post 4600, 3002 W. Route 120, will host the Support Our Veterans Craft & Vendor Show from 5-9 p.m. July 9. The event will feature more than 30 vendors, direct sale companies and crafters selling their products to the public in support of military veterans in the community. Admission is free.
