Meals for a Healthy Heart program coming to library
University of Illinois Extension and Eureka Public Library are partnering to bring “Meals for a Healthy Heart” to Eureka. The two-part heart health series will be held on Wednesdays, Feb. 5 and 12 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Eureka Public Library, 202 S Main St.
This series includes food demonstrations and two-full meals. Attendees take home a binder full of information, resources, and heart-healthy recipes.
Meals for a Healthy Heart will teach you how to plan, shop, and cook to help manage or prevent heart disease. Not only will participants receive a collection of heart-healthy recipes; the program also shares how to modify your favorite family recipes to make them healthier, all without giving up on taste.

Health Dept. offers Certified Food Protection Manager Course
Illinois regulations require food establishments to have at least one Certified Food Protection Manager (CFPM) on staff. University of Illinois Extension offers the Food Protection Manager Certification course and examination, which is required every 5 years.
University of Illinois Extension uses the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals examination, which is approved by the American National Standards Institute. Participants learn about basic food safety, personal hygiene, cross-contamination and allergens, time and temperature, and cleaning and sanitation.
The Certified Food Protection Manager course will meet for two sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 4 and Thursday, Feb. 6. The first day’s session will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and the second day’s session will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Woodford County Health Department, 1831 S. Main St., Eureka.
There will be a 30-minute lunch break. Bring a photo ID.
There is a program fee of $125 per person (two sessions). This fee is for the purchase of the book, examination, and materials.

Children’s Discovery Museum presenting Physics Day
The Children’s Discovery Museum, 101 E. Beaufort St., Normal, will be presenting Physics Day on Thursday, Jan. 30 from 10 a.m. to noon.
The program will focus on collision, also called impact, and the sudden, forceful direct contact of two bodies such as a foot and a soccer ball, a hammer and a nail head, or a falling object and a floor.
Physics Day: Collision will explore more about the relation between the kinetic energies before and after impact.
Museum holding orientation for volunteers
Every day volunteers and interns help make the Children’s Discovery Museum in Normal running and presenting programs to families throughout the region.
Volunteers spend their time interacting and playing with our visitors, help keep the museum tidy, lead free programming and assist with education classes in and out of the museum.
Orientations will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 30 and at noon on Friday, Feb. 7. Pre-registration is required.
Volunteer Requirements
- Age 13 or older
- Friendly and enthusiastic
- Reliable and flexible
- Consent to a background check (if under 19, no background check is required but applicant must have guardian’s consent)
- Attend a volunteer orientation
