Book Review: God and Ronald Reagan, a Spiritual Life

By Paul Kengor, ReganBooks, 2004.

I’ve gotten so used to being afraid to admit to any kind of Christian belief, that it’s amazing to find out how much President Reagan relied on his faith over the years. Somehow I’ve been led to believe that no one, but NO ONE, mentions God, Jesus, or Christianity because if they do, the Political Correctness Police will come down on them, or at the very least, someone might be offended. So, it was  eye-opening to read of RWR’s constant and consistent use of prayer, “God bless you,” and his moral underpinnings–most of which he got from his mother, Nellie.
In one of his speeches, he said that the idea of America “is nothing but the inherent love of freedom in each one of us . . . . It is simply the idea, the basis of this country and of our religion, the idea of the dignity of man, the idea that deep within the heart of each one of us is something so God-like and precious that no individual or group has a right to impose his or its will upon the people.”
He concluded many appearances with “God bless you,” including all his meetings with Mikhail Gorbachev. And throughout his political career he repeatedly stated his belief that a Higher Power was in charge and that He intended for man to be free. It was this faith that showed through as shining optimism and hope and that kept him firmly grounded on what was right.
Paul Kengor, has done a great job of weaving Reagan’s comments, speeches and notes into a book that’s easy and enjoyable to read. I came away with the certainty that Ronald Reagan was every bit the larger-than-life hero I had always thought him to be.
