Red Oak in winter
January 7, 2015The Fox Valley Park District’s nature center on Illinois Route 25 south of Batavia is quieter in winter, with leaves stripped from trees and many animals in hiding. Yet the bare trees also offer a better view for birds still wintering nearby—even the occasional bald eagle nesting across the river at Mooseheart. Patience while sitting at a large window facing outdoor bird feeders can be rewarded with visitors ranging from sparrows to woodpeckers. And there’s plenty to see inside, including turtles, snakes and even the center’s pet rabbit. (Suburban Chronicle photos).
