Sheriff’s Office spearheads coat drive for veterans
The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is partnering with the Veterans Assistance Commission and several local law enforcement agencies to collect coats and outerwear for the Lake County Law Enforcement Veterans Coat Drive. Donations of gently used coats, gloves, hats, socks and scarves will be accepted through Nov. 8 at the following locations: Lake County State’s State’s Attorney’s Office and Lake County Coroner’s Office, 18 N. County Street, Waukegan; Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 25 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., Waukegan; Lake County Sheriff’s Office, 1301 N. Milwaukee Ave., Libertyville; Bannockburn Police Department, 2275 Telegraph Road, Bannockburn; Deerfield Police Department, 850 Waukegan Road, Deerfield; Gurnee Police Department, 100 N. O’Plaine Road, Gurnee; Hawthorn Woods Police Department, 2 Lagoon Drive, Hawthorn Woods; Highland Park Police Department, 1677 Old Deerfield Road, Highland Park; Libertyville Police Department, 200 E. SWALCO to host household chemical waste collection
SWALCO (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) will host a household chemical waste collection event from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Lake Forest Public Works Department, 800 N. Field Drive, Lake Forest. Accepted materials include aerosol products, antifreeze and motor oil, fertilizers/herbicides/pesticides, fluorescent light bulbs/CFLs, furniture stripper and varnishes, gasoline and kerosene, household batteries (lithium and rechargeable only), household cleaners, oil-based paints and paint removers, and prescription and over-the-counter medicines and supplements (people and pet; no DEA controlled substances). Latex paint, empty paint cans or “treated” paint, business and medical waste, farm and lab chemicals, propane tanks, lead-acid and alkaline batteries, explosives, construction/demolition debris, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors and household electronics will not be accepted. District 120 Board earns statewide recognition
The village announced that the Mundelein High School (MHS) District 120 Board of Education is one of 20 school boards to earn the Illinois Association of School Board’s (IASB) School Board Governance Recognition designation. The recognition is designed to acknowledge school boards that have engaged in activities and modeled behaviors that lead to excellence in local school governance in support of quality education. The MHS District 120 Board includes President Joanne Anderson, Vice President Al Hitzke, Secretary Laura Vogt, and Sara Davalos, Laura Mellon, Thomas Ouimet and Jane Siegal. The honorees will be recognized at the Fall IASB Lake Division Dinner Meeting, as well as in a display at the Joint Annual Conference, in November. Hospital to host Art in the Barn Art Show
The village announced that the 43rd Annual Art in the Barn Fine Art Show will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 23 and 24 on the grounds of Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, 450 W. Highway 22. The event includes more than 175 artists exhibiting works in all mediums, a local student art gallery, the Children’s Art Corner, face painting, a petting zoo, a variety of food vendors, a raffle with prizes donated by the artists and more. Live entertainment includes headliners John Ballantyne’s Crazy Heart (4 p.m. Sept. 23) and Wiggle-Ohs (4 p.m. Sept. 24). Admission is $5; free for children under age 12. No pets will be allowed. Libertyville
Bicycle Commission to host Community Bike Ride
The village announced that the Libertyville Bicycle Commission will host the 2017 Community Bike Ride from 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 23. Riders will meet at the parking lot at Riverside Park, 700 Riverside Drive. The ride will start on Riverside Drive, turn right on East Rockland Road and then turn left onto the Des Plaines River Trail. The ride will continue on the Des Plaines River Trail under St. Mary’s Road and loop around Old School Forest Preserve back to Riverside Park. In addition, George Garner Cyclery will have staff on-site to perform safety checks on bikes and show the correct way to wear a bicycle helmet. All riders are required to wear a bike helmet, and must sign and return (on-site) a Community Bike Ride “Hold Harmless” release form (available at www.libertyville.com/bikeride). Smith named to fill open Village Trustee term
The village announced that Eric Smith has been appointed to fill the unexpired term left open by former Village Trustee Steven Trilling. Smith, a 29-year Buffalo Grove resident, currently serves as Chairman of Buffalo Grove’s Planning and Zoning Commission, is a member of the Lake Cook Corridor Planning Group, and was a member of the committee that chose the Lake Cook Corridor project consultant. In addition to serving as an interim Village Trustee (2010-11), Smith previously served as president, vice president, treasurer and secretary of the Buffalo Grove Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, as well as president of the Rotary Club of Buffalo Grove. Deerfield Harvest Fest offers full day of activities
The village announced that the Deerfield Harvest Fest will be held Sept. 23 at the intersection of Deerfield Road and Park Avenue. The event includes a variety of kids’ activities from 8 a.m. to noon at the Farmers Market, including the Pumpkin Seed Guessing Contest, Pin the Worm on the Apple, the Jack-O-Lantern Bean Bag Toss, the Pumpkin Ring Toss, gourd bowling, apple bobbing, a balloon artists, face painting, Touch-A-Truck, prizes and more. Harvest Fest continues from 5:30-9 p.m. and includes free hots dogs and corn (provided by Fresh Thyme), free dessert (provided by Nothing Bundt Cakes), and live music by Rosie & The Rivets (5:45 p.m.) and Hi Infidelity (7 p.m.).
