 McHenry County College theatre group offers summer show

As part of McHenry County College’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Black Box Summer Theatre (MCC’s new professional theatre) is presenting, “Moon Over Buffalo,” a comedy by playwright Ken Ludwig. The play centers on characters George and Charlotte Hay, fading stars of the 1950s seeking one last shot as stardom in the movies while performing in community theater in Buffalo, N.Y. “Moon Over Buffalo” is directed by Crystal Lake resident Regina Belt-Daniels. The cast includes Shannon Mayhall (Cary), winner of the 2016 Broadway World Chicago Award for Best Actress; Jay Geller (Kildeer), chair of theatre at MCC; Jeff Cook, Trace Gamache and Katherine Kallus (Crystal Lake); Sean Plotts (Wonder Lake); and Brendan Gaughan and Kathie Comella (Woodstock). Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. June 16, 17, 23 and 25, and 2 p.m. June 18 and 25 at McHenry County College, 8900 U.S. Highway 14, Crystal Lake.  McHenry County Conservation Dist. nets award for Tyron Creek Woods project

The McHenry County Conservation District recently received the 2017 Great Lakes Park, Facility and Recreation Program Award for the Tyron Creek Woods Land Protection Project, which brought together a diverse partnership to save more than 60 acres of old-growth oaks, a headwater stream, sedge meadows and relic wet prairies. The partnership included the McHenry Conservation Foundation, the Land Conservancy of McHenry County, the Grand Victoria Foundation and the McHenry County Conservation District. The award, presented by the Great Lakes Park Training Institute, based in Bloomington, Ind., recognizes parks, facilities and programs completed within the last five years that represent innovative, cost-effective design, demonstrate the utilization of community input and resources, and provide a significant impact on the community and agency. City renews electric supply program with Dynergy

The city announced that it has renewed the Crystal Lake Electric Aggregation Program, contracting with Dynergy Energy Services for a 15-month period (July 2017 to October 2018) at a fixed rate of 6.748 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh), compared to ComEd’s weighted 12-month rate of 7.185 cents per kWh. Residents will continue to receive their bills from ComEd for electric supply, delivery and taxes, with supply fees being passed along to Dynergy Energy Services. Rates will be changed on the July meter-read date for each resident or business and will be reflected on the August bill. There is no enrollment fee to join, and no early termination fee for residents choosing to opt out of the program. Chamber honors Dist. 155 with Pride of Crystal Lake Award

The Crystal Lake Chamber of Commerce recently recognized Community High School District 155 with the Pride of Crystal Lake Award for promoting business entrepreneurship through its INCubator Edu Program. Representatives from Dist. 155 (Crystal Lake Central, Crystal Lake South, Cary-Grove and Prairie Ridge high schools, and the Haber Oaks Campus) received the award during the Chamber’s Pitch Night, held May 22 at Prairie Ridge High School. The INCubator Edu Program, a capstone business class for Dist. 155 seniors, teaches students about foundation business topics while providing an opportunity to create and fully develop a product or service throughout the year. Student entrepreneurs presented their original product or service to a group of judges on Pitch Night, and the student team of Cole Brown, Tyler Covers, Trey Fuchs and Robert Masini won a cash prize of $150 each for developing Find Fresh, an app created to improve the business of buying and selling fresh produce. Galt Airport to host annual Barnstormer’s Day event

Barnstormer’s Day 2017, presented by EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) Chapter 932, will be held 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 17 at Galt Airport, 5112 Greenwood Road. The event includes an old-style fly-in and drive-in with vintage planes, cars and motorcycles, as well as biplane rides, local crafters and live entertainment. A pancake breakfast (including eggs, sausage and hash browns) will be available from 8-11 a.m. All ages are welcome. Admission (including parking) is free. Woodstock

 

 MDOT constructing roundabout at busy intersection

The city reported that the McHenry County Division of Transportation (MCDOT) is addressing the high number of accidents at the intersection of Raffel Road and Charles Road, north of Woodstock North High School, by constructing the area’s first roundabout. Charles Road, between Greenwood Road and Route 47, will be closed for construction of the project throughout the summer. The project will consist of a single-lane, modern roundabout at the intersection, and is expected to be completed by mid-August (weather dependent).  Library to host program with local cookbook author

The Cary Area Public Library, 1606 Three Oaks Road, will present Culinary Tales from the Long Grove Emporium Lady from 7-8 p.m. June 15. The special program (for adults) features Cary resident Marilyn Penney Welch, author of the self-published cookbook, “Long Grove Emporium Past and Present Cooking.” The title is borrowed from the name of the antique shop that Welch owns and operates in Long Grove. Welch will discuss the story behind her cookbook and recipes. Refreshments will be served. Sales of the cookbook will benefit the Friends of the Cary Area Library.
