By Holly Eitenmiller For Chronicle Media — February 11, 2017One Peoria man is dead another was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head, following a pair of allegedly unrelated shootings Thursday, Feb. 9 and Friday, Feb.10.
Raheem D. Wilson, 24, was pronounced dead at OSF St. Francis Medical Center at 11:53 p.m. Feb. 9 after he was shot on the back steps of a Thrush Street residence.
Police were summoned to the vicinity of Broadway and Thrush when a ShotSpotter gunfire system alerted police of the shooting.
In 2013, the city of Peoria began employing the SpotShotter system in South Peoria to enhance its “Don’t Shoot Program.” The system differentiates between the sounds of actual gunfire, versus fireworks and the like, allowing police to react with more efficiently.
Little is known yet of the circumstances surrounding Wilson’s death. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said an autopsy had been scheduled sometime before Feb. 13.
About three hours later, an unidentified man was found unresponsive on the dancefloor of Club Envy, a windowless nightclub at 1412 SW Jefferson in Peoria. The victim was shot in the head. Again, SpotShotter identified numerous gunshots in the vicinity of the club, to which police responded.
Michael A. Brown, 29, of Peoria and Douglas L. Sallie, 35, were arrested in connection to that shooting. When police arrived at the scene, a Club Envy doorman identified the shooter, who was a passenger in a nearby truck.
After a brief pursuit, first by vehicle, then on foot, the passenger, Brown, was apprehended and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon by a felon. Sallie, the driver, was charged with battery and mob action.
The condition of the victim remains unknown as of Feb. 11.
This shooting isn’t the first violent episode at the Peoria night club. In August, 2015, Donnie L. Richardson, 24, was shot and killed in a vehicle that was leaving the Club Envy parking lot. Again, SpotShotter effectively alerted police to the shooting.
