Special Olympics seeking volunteers for summer games

Special Olympics Illinois has opened volunteer registration for its upcoming summer games, which will be held from June 9 to June 11 at Illinois State University and Normal West High School. In keeping with past tradition, volunteers are the backbone of much of the logistics and planning for the annual event, which gives more than 4,000 Special Olympics athletes across the state opportunities to compete in one of six sports.

Donation Creation for Morton Library

You can help Morton Library’s Summer Reading Program by visiting Eli’s Coffee Shop during the month of June. Each purchase of the shop’s salted caramel cupcake latte will result in a $1 donation the Bernice L. Oberlander/Lynne R. Walters Library Children’s Summer Reading Endowment Fund.

The fund was established with a donation from Dan and Lynne Walters. Lynne’s mother, Bernice Oberlander, was a member of the Morton Library Board for 32 years, and served as president for 28 of those years.

Ttax-deductible donations to this endowment fund are welcome. Checks may be sent to 105 E. Jefferson St., Morton, IL 61550.

Good Neighbor Days feature 5K, 1-mile runs

The Washington Park District will hold its 2017 Good Neighbor Days 5K and 1-mile Run/Walk June 1.

Register for the Good Neighbor Days 5K online at goodneighbordays5k.com. The entry fee for the 5K is $32 up until race day. Race day registration is $38. Registration includes an event performance running shirt. Packets will be available for pick up 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 1, at Running Central; 5-7 p.m. June 2, and 6-7 a.m. June 3, at Five Points Washington. Check-in at Five Points Washington will begin at 6 a.m., and the race will begin at 7:30 a.m. A Kids Fun Runs will start at 9 a.m.

Trophies will be awarded to the top overall male and female finishers of the 5K as well as the top three male and female finishers in each age division.

The 1-mile Fun Run/Walk is an event for the entire family, or for those individuals not wanting to compete in the 5K race. The route will follow the Washington Recreation Trail through Washington Park. Each participant will receive a T-shirt. This event also will start at 7:30 a.m. The entry fee is $20 now, and $25 on race day. Immediately following the event, participants may head to the Washington Rotary Pancake and Sausage Breakfast for a free meal at Washington High School.

Proceeds from this event will benefit the Washington Park District Foundation. For more information, call the Washington Park District at (309) 444-9413. The events are presented by Uftring Chevrolet-Washington.
