Rockford Lutheran falls in semifinals

Westchester-St. Joseph jumped out to a 19-1 lead and never looked back on the way to a 55-38 Class 3A state semifinal victory over Rockford Lutheran on Friday at Peoria’s Carver Arena.

The Crusaders (29-3) will meet Chicago-Morgan Park in Saturday’s third place game at 12:15 p.m.

St. Joseph (28-6) plays Belleville Althoff — 82-74 semifinal winners — for the Class 3A state title at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Lutheran trailed 21-3 after one quarter, 33-11 at halftime and 41-23 after three quarters.

Forward Nate Wieting paced the Crusaders with 11 points.

Rockford Lutheran came into the game riding a five-game winning streak, including the 49-41 Supersectional victory over Peoria Manual on Tuesday that earned their ticket to state.
